Bruce Buchanan was born in Brisbane. He studied art at the Brisbane Central Technical College and developed his watercolour technique during his university architectural training. He was director of an architectural practice for many years, but now paints full time.
His work is influenced by first-hand experience of the Outback and of the coastal areas of Australia. Although living in Queensland, he spends time every year painting in South Australia, particularly in the Flinders Ranges, and in Tasmania. The subtle interplay of light, mood and texture in the natural landscape dominates his work. He is also interested in interpreting forms and tonal contrasts of structures within the urban and industrial landscape.
