Louise Feneley is an Adelaide based artist.
The background to the latest body of work by Louise Feneley at Hill Smith Gallery in Ocrtober 2010 "The Painted Veil, which those who live call Life", is the contemplation of death and life, questions of mortality, burial traditions, and in particular the shroud; also reflections upon the illusion we call living, our vulnerability in the face of the fragility and transience of life.
"In the figurative work, two elements are concentrated on - the shroud, and the persona. both of these are similar in that the shroud is a layer that veils the dead, whilst the persona consists of laters that veil the living. This persona - like a veil, a camouflage, a concealment, an illusion of the psyche generated by heredity, environment, tendencies, memory, etc - hides the real nature of Being.
The face here is not related to a specific personality but to an essential or archetypal human, stripped of extras such as hair and clothing that define individuality. With a neutral expression, hyet aware of vulnerability, there is an internal question being asked with the intensity of deep longing, "Who am I? Why am I here? Where am I going?"
