HILL SMITH GALLERY

Dianne Gall

Dianne Gall was born in Adelaide in 1964. In 1985 she completed a Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) at the South Australian School of Art. In 1987 she undertook a Graduate Diploma in Library Studies at the South Australian institute of Technology, and in 1996 achieved a Graduate Diploma in Management at the University of Adelaide.

Dianne Gall's still-life paintings focus on found and owned objects, which, taken from their familiar surroundings are imbued with a new importance via scale and composition. Objects are chosen that represent the visual backdrop to domestic Australia, including Diana Pottery Ware along with dresses, shoes and dress-makers' mannequins. Sometimes other objects appear in the picture, a small bird may gaze upon an object or look out to the viewer, or indeed act as a sentinel to the action.

Occasionally, favourite objects get to share the composition, like Astro girl, which could be an expression of alter-ego. Gall's paintings preserve on canvas the very energy of life and happiness, emitting an overall sense of light and airiness.
