Tony Lloyd's first Adelaide exhibition, expands upon his ongoing investigation into the nocturnal world and his obsession with darkness and light.
Lloyd’s oil paintings are dramatic renderings of captivating moments; a forest road lit by the car’s headlights, a dead tree silhouetted by a twilight sky, shafts of light bursting from dark clouds, fields of unfocused light that hover between reality and abstraction. The immediate simplicity and atmosphere of the paintings have a spellbinding effect; the landscape is transfigured into scenes that resonate with untold narratives.
Light is the underlying subject of all Lloyd’s paintings. Shadows set the stage for the revelatory nature of light. Indeed, the paintings seem to have an incandescence of their own. Lloyd pays exquisite attention to the detailed rendering of forms, be it a tree, a mountain, or a cloud. He depicts an ephemeral reality that we often experience but rarely take the time to appreciate. His pictures seduce us into thinking about what is beyond the headlights’ reach, and directly appeal to our memories and imaginings.
Lloyd completed his Masters in 2000 (RMIT) and has held 15 solo exhibitions and participated in over 50 group exhibitions. Winner of the People's Choice Award at the Conrad Jupiter Art Prize in 2005, Lloyd has been short-listed for numerous art prizes, including the 2007 Arthur Guy Memorial Painting Prize at Bendigo Art Gallery.
In 2007 Lloyd undertook an artist residency at The British School at Rome, Italy. He has recently been awarded an Australia Council Skills and Arts Development Grant to undertake a studio residency in Amsterdam in October this year.
Lloyd’s work has been collected by Artbank, BHP Billiton, City of Whitehorse, Macquarie Bank, RMIT, and by private collectors in Australia, Europe, Japan and the U.S.
