HILL SMITH GALLERY

John Waters

John Waters originally trained as an architect and practised in this field for fifteen years before studying and practicing art full-time since 2000. Such a background is clearly discernible in his work, which exhibits a sure sense of composition and practiced draughtsmanship, as well as the repeated use of architectural motifs. Waters' work encompasses two strains: the meditative charcoal drawings, acting as studies for his larger oil on linen works. Both mediums depict quiet, calm tableaux that are almost dreamlike in their imagery.

"I weave real and personal elements in slightly mysterious compositions to create calm dreamlike paintings with a feeling of otherness and nostalgia".

During 2001 and 2002 John Waters was a member of the Board of Governors of Adelaide Central School of Art, and a member of Twinbee Artists Studios from 2002 - 2004.
