Small scenes from a large landscape
The landscape we live in is seamlessly entwined into the backdrop to our lives. Each day we pass through landscapes such as cities, country, desert, mountains or sea. Whether these landscapes have been altered or completely untouched they all uniquely resonate with each individual. They bring out our innate spirit and connection that we feel with the land, a particularly distinct part of Australian culture. I think the two paintings that demonstrate my profound affection for the land is ‘Seaside Garden’ and ‘Lost Scenes’. I believe that both these painting are landscapes that most individuals can connect with because they are both such prominent landscapes in our life that we deeply appreciate but sometimes forget to stop and look at. While our love for the beach is somewhat stereotypical, ‘Seaside Garden’ evokes a sense of mystery and fancifulness affiliated with the Garden of Eden. Beautiful, but forbidden. ‘Lost scenes’ is a nature strip we are all familiar with, but the rich color of the flowers on the poinciana tree, change our perception of it from pest to pleasure. I love to capture the small scenes surrounding us with delicate brush strokes and the play of light and shadow which seamlessly envelops it. My attention to detail signals a personal experience with the landscape expressing the ‘moment’ and finds beauty within the things we pass by every day. I find beauty within the small details of sunlit leaves, afternoon shadows and the abstract shapes of vegetation and the land. It continues to surprise and stimulate at the same time.
